ASPIRE Semester 1, Course 7: Literacy in the Classroom
July 10th, 2025
Literacy in the Classroom is the second course in the ASPIRE to Teach Two-Year Program, Semester 1 in College of Education.
Within the course Literacy in the Classroom, educators are required to select the appropriate track corresponding to their certification level (7A for P-3, 7B for K-6, and 7C for Secondary Grades 7-12).
The 7A course track prepares pre-service educators to support literacy development from birth through age 8, focusing on cognitive and linguistic underpinnings such as phonological awareness, working memory, and attention that influence emergent reading skills. Candidates will also develop practice in creating diverse and equitable literacy-rich environments featuring emerging phonics instruction and scaffolded read-aloud strategies to nurture early readers in P‑3 classrooms.
The 7B course track focuses on practical strategies for teaching K–6 literacy, covering core components of reading instruction such as phonics vs. whole language, determining student and text reading levels, vocabulary development, read-alouds, running records, and the Readers & Writers Workshop model. It emphasizes culturally responsive pedagogy by integrating multicultural, multilingual, and diverse literature while equipping candidates to assess and support readers through targeted interventions.
The 7C course track prepares future educators to effectively integrate reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills across all content areas in grades 7–12. Emphasizing strategies for disciplinary literacy, the course equips teacher candidates with tools to support diverse learners in developing content-specific literacy skills essential for academic success.
