July 10th, 2025
Course 17: Using STEM to Strengthen Instruction is the second course of Semester 3 in the ASPIRE to Teach Two-Year Program in the College of Education.
With the Using STEM to Strengthen Instruction course, candidates are required to select the track that corresponds to their certification area (either 17A for P-3 and K-6 certifications OR 17B for Secondary (Grades 7-12).
The 17A course track empowers educators to deepen their mathematics knowledge and instructional practice (P-3 and K-6) by building strong conceptual foundations and embracing Cognitively Guided Instruction to understand and respond to student thinking. Candidates will develop pedagogical content knowledge—including cognitively guided mathematics techniques—learn to assess and remediate learning difficulties, and use data-driven instruction to support struggling learners and enrich content for advanced students.
The 17B course track equips secondary educators (grades 7–12) with practical strategies to integrate broader STEM concepts into their curriculum, enhancing student engagement and critical thinking across subject areas beyond traditional sciences and mathematics. Participants will explore interdisciplinary approaches and hands-on activities that support deeper learning and real-world application.
