Full course description

ASPIRE Semester 1, Course 7 Literacy in the Classroom
January 20th, 2026

Course 7: Literacy in the Classroom is the 2nd course of Semester 1 of the ASPIRE to Teach educator preparation program in the College of Education.

This course prepares pre-service educators to promote literacy development that is developmentally appropriate, culturally inclusive, and aligned with research-based practices across content areas. Candidates will explore how to support students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking through explicit literacy instruction and integrated content-area approaches. The course is divided into three certification-aligned tracks to address the specific developmental and curricular needs of the learners each candidate will teach.

Track 7A: P–3 Educators (Birth–Age 8)

Prepares pre-service educators to support language and literacy development across the curriculum for young learners. Focus is placed on the cognitive and linguistic underpinnings of early reading—including phonological awareness, working memory, and attention—that influence emergent reading skills. Candidates will develop practice in creating diverse and equitable literacy-rich environments, featuring emerging phonics instruction and scaffolded read-aloud strategies to nurture early readers in P–3 classrooms.

Track 7B: Elementary (K–6) & Special Education

Focuses on foundational literacy skills, including phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing, within a balanced literacy framework. Candidates will design responsive lessons using formative assessment and explore literacy differentiation strategies for struggling readers, English language learners, and students with IEPs.

Track 7C: Secondary (7–12) & Special Education

Emphasizes literacy across content areas, disciplinary reading and writing strategies, and scaffolding for adolescent learners. Candidates will learn to support students’ academic vocabulary, comprehension of complex texts, and expression of understanding through writing, particularly for diverse learners and students with special needs.
