ADG: Case 11: When Chronic Opioid Use Masks Underlying Cardiac Symptoms - Enduring Recorded Course

RECORDED OPIOID SAFETY GRAND ROUND: Registration opens and course begins July 1, 2024.

When Visceral Opioid Use Masks Underlying Pathologies is a recorded opioid safety grand round that will provide standardized, comprehensive, easily accessible, evidence-based education on best practices and current laws regarding opioids for professionals throughout the State. This presentation will include case studies that focus on the meaning of masking symptoms from opioid analgesia, data associated with underlying illness when there is no “complaint of pain”, early changes in physical function that may indicate new or undertreated pain, and potentially masked pathology.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Healthcare Professionals with Prescribing Authority (i.e. Physicians, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists)

OBJECTIVES:  As a result of participation in this course, members of the interprofessional team will improve their ability to:

1. Discuss the meaning of masking symptoms (use steroids as example) from opioid analgesia. This will help the learner to more accurately identify the level of pain and its appropriate treatment.

2. Assess data associated with underlying illness when there is no “complaint of pain”. The learner will be able to reflect upon multiple sources of information to make an informed decision.

3. Recognize early changes in physical function that may indicate new or undertreated pain. The learner will be able to identify these situations and adjust the plan of care accordingly.

4. Plan to rule out potentially masked pathology.
