ADG: Case 12: When To Say No To Increasing Opioid Analgesics - Enduring Recorded Course

RECORDED OPIOID SAFETY GRAND ROUND: Registration opens and course begins July 1, 2024.

When To Say No To Increasing Opioid Analgesics is a RECORDED opioid safety grand round that will provide standardized, comprehensive, easily accessible, evidence-based education on best practices and current laws regarding opioids for professionals throughout the State. This presentation will include case studies that focus on the patient’s request/need for more opioid medication, patient’s theory of their pain, making adjustments to the plan of care, and explaining the decision-making process to the patient. 

OBJECTIVES:  As a result of participation in this course, members of the interprofessional team will improve their ability to:

1. Assess the patient’s request/need for more opioid medication. The learner will be able to determine if an increase in medication is necessary or not.

2. Integrate the patient’s theory of their pain in the decision-making. This will help the learner to make the patient feel validated in their complaints of pain and involve them in the development of their care plan.

3. Prepare to make adjustments to the plan of care. The learner will learn to have flexibility and resourcefulness in the plan of care.

4. Explain/restate the decision-making process to the patient. This will assist the patient to remain engaged and informed by the learner.
