BTA 103 Getting the Word Out: Digital Communications for Union Organizing

Meta – owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and a major developer of artificial intelligence – recently surpassed Google to become the internet's top digital advertising engine. Its apps reach over three billion users, nearly 40% of the global population, and its advanced analytics and demographic targeting make it easy to define your audience and track how people engage with your campaigns. These platforms were built before the current wave of AI, but the two are now converging — and in this class, you'll learn to navigate both these digital spaces and the newer AI tools reshaping them.
Participants in this bottom-up organizing training will gain a deeper understanding of social media, the current media landscape, and digital messaging. They will learn how to apply this knowledge to their organizing efforts, and to develop effective messages for members, workers, contractors, owners, the news media, and the public. In addition, participants will explore various new and evolving tools and techniques – including analytics, targeting, and AI – for creating and delivering those messages.
Topical Areas Include:
The power of storytelling; key features of cutting-edge social media; and collaboration with traditional media, partnerships, and growth industries. Additional topics will include messaging on PLA’s/prevailing wage and the secure and effective use of AI in outreach to members and in organizing campaigns.
