Program Structure & Deliverables

  • Days 1–3: PM4EM 3-Day Accelerator Workshop
    • Focus: Practical application using the "Riding the Wave" methodology.12
    • Topics: Hazard analysis, scoping, WBS development, budgeting, and risk planning for "blue sky" and response operations.
  • Days 4–6: PMP® Exam Preparation
    • Focus: Strategic credentialing aligned with the latest PMP Examination Content Outline.1
    • Topics: People (42%), Process (50%), and Business Environment (8%), including intensive Agile and Hybrid methodology training.

Participants may take this in parts; just the 3-Day Workshop; or take the whole course. 

Note- in order to satisfy the 35 contact hours for the PMP Certification, you will need to take the whole 6-day course.

Learning Objectives

PM4EM Workshop

  • Explain the reason why project management (PM) methods are appropriate for emergency management (EM);
  • Apply a framework for how PM applies to EM;
  • Demonstrate the use of basic project management methods and tools: scope, schedule, budget; working with examples appropriate for the emergency management field;
  • Develop the other elements of project planning: HR, quality, risk, procurement, stakeholder and communication management;
  • Explain the process of monitoring and controlling projects;
  • Identify next steps to implement and build on what you have learned.

PMP Certification Exam Prep.

  • Explain the PMP exam structure and determine appropriate project planning approaches, such as predictive, agile, or hybrid.
  • Describe how to align projects with organizational strategy, manage compliance requirements, and track benefit realization.
  • Discuss how to build and lead diverse teams through effective stakeholder collaboration, conflict resolution, empowerment, and the application of emotional intelligence.
  • Develop project plan elements: scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, human resource plan, stakeholder and communications, and procurement planning.
  • Demonstrate how to manage communication, project artifacts, and change control while executing formal project closure and knowledge transfer.
  • Develop test-taking strategies and utilize mock assessments to identify common mistakes before the actual exam.

Instructor Bio

Participants may take this in parts; just the 3-Day Workshop; or take the whole course.  Andrew Boyarsky, MSM, PMP, CBCP, cABCF, is President of Pinnacle Performance Management, and an emergency management, business continuity, and disaster recovery specialist with 30 years of experience in project management. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor in Project and Emergency Management at NYU and John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY).  In the early 1990s, he managed large-scale emergency programs overseas in former Yugoslavia and in the Caucasus with the Red Cross and Catholic Relief Services. From 2007-2016, Prof. Boyarsky was Program Manager helping the NYC Office of Emergency Management in emergency preparedness. His clients have included FEMA, the Regional Catastrophic Planning Team of NY-NJ-CT-PA, Los Angeles Emergency Management Dept., NYC Emergency Management Dept., NYC Dept. of Health, and Baltimore City Health Dept. He is the author of Riding the Wave: Applying Project Management Science in the Field of Emergency Management (CRC Press). He has also developed and delivered highly successful PMP certification prep. courses for over two decades.
