Full course description

SUD Core Curriculum for Young Health Professionals
April 1st, 2026

The Providers Clinical Support System – Universities (PCSS-U) Program supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive substance use disorder (SUD) curriculum for third-year medical students at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (RVSOM) during their clinical rotation at the Neuro Musculoskeletal Institute (NMI). Grounded in a chronic illness and recovery management model and aligned with core elements recommended by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the program establishes a step-by-step framework for integrating SUD education into the broader medical curriculum. The initiative also advances strategies to champion institutional and administrative support to ensure long-term integration and sustainability of the curriculum within professional healthcare training.

The program’s goal is to promote SUD education across healthcare schools and equip future physicians with the knowledge and confidence to identify and treat substance use disorders upon graduation. By reducing stigma and increasing access to screenings, assessments, and evidence-based services, particularly medications for alcohol and opioid use disorders, the grant addresses critical treatment gaps in southern New Jersey. Beyond the funding period, learning modules will be embedded into the standard NMI rotation and made continuously available through the Canvas Learning Management System under Rowan Global Learning Partners, ensuring replicability, accessibility, and lasting impact.
